5 simple tips for a greener 2015

Categories:

In Chinese belief, red symbolises good fortune and joy. However, did you know that 2015 is the year of the green goat? By being green and adopting sustainable practices, we believe it will bring in green prosperity too!

Here are our 5 simple tips to green your 2015 starting this Lunar New Year.

Recycle & Reuse while spring cleaning

Slide 1While spring cleaning, sort items for recycling (Eg. paper, plastic, cans..) Repurpose items like old clothes as rags, and bigger ticket items like home appliances and furniture that are still in good condition can be donated to charities such as Salvation Army.

Have fun while re-purposing

We give out red pac7eaefbd6ac9596515cd964dc2197834bkets and gifts throughout the year on CNY, birthdays, or Christmas. Recycle paper by creating your own red packet envelopes, fortune cookies or gift packaging using old magazines or used ang pows. Used ang pows also make great CNY decorations when re-purposed!

Green your celebrations by minimising waste

WLFHW Logohen celebrating CNY (Or the many other festivities throughout the rest of the year), minimise the use of disposables, especially non biodegradable plastic cutleries. Reuse old plastic bags as trash bags rather than brand new ones. Also, in an attempt to throw the best parties and our love for food, we typically over buy food during celebrations. Avoid buying too much food at the parties to avoid food wastage, which is a growing concern in Singapore.

Use long-lasting items when renovating

MultiPanel-with-LogoIf you’re thinking about renovating your home this year, think about investing in long-lasting, eco-friendly materials in your home. For example, most kitchen and bathroom cabinets are built of non-waterproof materials such as plywood – but because they are frequently exposed to moisture and water, some tend to mould and rot quickly, which leads to more material and renovation work needed. MultiPanel, which is 100% waterproof, eco-friendly and long lasting, can be used to prevent this.

Support energy efficient products
With our homes furnished with the latest appliances and products such as the air-conditioner, washing machine, dryer, water heater, we are utilising more energy each year.red-plug-jpg Without cutting away this level of comfort we are used to, look into reducing energy use by getting energy efficient products like LED lights, solar air-conditioners and more. Switch on appliances only when in use and we believe this would contribute in cutting down energy use and your electricity bill!

Hope you enjoyed these tips and have a happy 2015!

Green Productivity in Construction

Categories:

Innoverde introduces 100% waterproof & lightweight building panel to Singapore, increasing productivity, manpower savings and environmental benefits.

The Singapore Construction Productivity Week (SCPW), since it’s launch in 2011, has made significant progress in promoting the adoption of more productive construction methods. With the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) introducing a S$250-million Construction Productivity and Capability Fund (CPCF) as part of the Governments efforts to help the construction industry improve productivity and strengthen its capability, there’s no reason why construction companies shouldn’t adopt these new methods.

With a greater focus on environmental sustainability and the pressure to build responsibly, how do we combine the two to push for green productivity?

How can we champion clean, sustainable construction methods and transform a work space from this (left) to this (right)..

Mess Comparison

…reduce manpower, get the job done faster while promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly building practices at the same time?

This goal mirrors Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan’s and the government’s aim to strive for the ““construction industry to be cleaner, quieter and faster..” by adopting game-changing technologies in construction.

Sounds like an impossible challenge? Not quite, and it’s in motion.

Achieving green productivity in construction

We gained some valuable tips from our Australian principal company, MultiPanel, who has introduced these green productivity solutions since it’s incorporation in 2000. With the high and increasing manpower costs in Australia, especially for skilled workers, it left builders in Australia no choice but to implement these manpower saving solutions to help reduce their costs. Facing a similar trend in Singapore, it now has become the right time for us to look at these solutions to overcome ouManpower issuer own rising manpower costs.

To illustrate – When building a balcony, traditional methods of construction would be to use concrete, which is extremely heavy. Not only does concrete take a long time to cure, require water ponding, and waterproofing, there is also a high risk of error if the concrete isn’t set properly, which leads to the possibility of re-work. Working with cement is also very messy. Using a slightly lighter fibre cement board as a substrate, several waterproofing precautions still need to be taken as well, especially on the joints.

With MultiPanel, a 100% waterproof, strong and lightweightLightweight material material with eco-friendly properties, this panel can be used as a substrate together with a frame made of steel, aluminium or Cross Laminated Timbre (CLT). CLT, which has just been approved to use in Singapore for structural components in buildings, enables manpower and time savings of up to 35 per cent compared to conventional construction methods. When used with MultiPanel, becomes 100% waterproof.

MultiPanel on it’s own also has it’s own strengths. Being lightweight, not only are One Manpowertransportation costs and emissions reduced as less fuel is needed for transportation, but less manpower is needed to carry and install the panels on site. There is less installation time as there is no need for water ponding, waterproofing, and the panel can be easily installed using traditional wood working tools. Without deteriorating and rotting due to water damage, It is long lasting and there is no need to change the panels over many years. Also having insulation properties, it acts as a natural coolant and lowers the temperature of the building.

In terms of scale, not only does this affect new buildings, but also a large number of existing buildings which require A&A works or conservation. It is a quick and clean method of building & waterproofing with little downtime.

Eco-friendly, 100% Waterproof & lightweight panels

MultiPanel is a lightweight and 100% waterproof building panel that will not absorb any moisture and can be used without a membrane coating. MultiPanel is used in many building applications including facades, bulkheads, eaves, external cladding, waterproof flooring substrate, waterproof wall lining for wet areas and more. Thinner panels are flexible allowing for creativity in designing curved elements within the building. The ease in which this can be achieved makes on-site installation extremely efficient.

MultiPanel has been used as substrates in many showers and balconies and has proven to save labour for onsite installation but more importantly is a solution to moisture related problems in wet areas.

Innoverde converts carpark area into fun space!

Park(ing) Day Jalan Besar 2014 was a community design project organised by Sutdio (SUTD’s Architecture, Art and Design Community) and COLOURS: Collectively Ours (a design consultancy) on the 19th of September 2014. This project event was part of a worldwide attempt started by Rebar in San Francisco to reclaim spaces for the public and improve communities by converting parking lots into miniature parking lot-sized parks for a day annually.

Untitled-2Supported by Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and the Housing Development Board (HDB), parking lots under their management were offered to participants who showcased a variety of interesting and entertaining displays from outdoor furniture and performances to electric vehicles that were open to the public to interact with. Participants were given a unique carpark ticket to display at their parking lots by the URA PubliCity SG team.

We at Innoverde did our part in supporting Park(ing) Day by working together with COLOURS to realise their outdoor modular furniture concept – ‘Flex’, using our new building and construction material, MultiPanel.

MultiPanel, being an eco-friendly, lightweight, 100% waterproof and strong, high density poly-urethane construction panel, was perfect for the fabrication of Flex. MultiPanel enabled CO1509860_706752022746779_3713938109432439312_nLOURS to achieve its vision for Flex to be light enough for members of the community to reconfigure its modular pieces easily and still be strong and durable enough to weather outdoor environments. In addition, every modular piece comes with a fully functional planter box to cultivate a sense of ownership among the members of the community that use it and to spur “greening” of urban areas around Singapore. Throughout the event, we played around with the display’s configurations by rearranging the modular pieces, and were encouraged to see the different ways that the public could use Flex. While some used Flex as a place to rest their weary feet and chit-chat with friends, others used it as a place to have a meal or to park their bikes.

Other than our collaboration project with the event organiser, Innoverde had our own parking lot where we displayed our E-Trike. The E-Trike is a pedal-assisted electric tricycle that is powered by clean energy generated by our EFOY Fuel Cell which is 100% reliable, off-grid and quiet. Coupled with solar panels, one fuel cartridge can last for more than 1,500km.

Many passersby were drawn to the striking E-Trike. Although shy at first, most were excited to give the E-Trike a ride around the carpark and were impressed by not only the power of the pedal assistance but also intrigued by how the EFOY Fuel Cell powers the 180 degree camera mounted on the front and the wifi system of which it is connected to as well; the system enables the camera feed to be remotely viewed and captured. Of course, taking selfies with it remotely with an iPad, was a must.

As the sun set, we were tired and sun burnt. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the interactions with members of the public and discussing how our green innovations could do so much more than what we showcased. Park(ing) Day is a great initiative and, albeit the sun and weather, we enjoyed it very much.  We look forward to participating in more of such events and will definitely remember to bring sunblock the next time round.

Greening urban areas with FLEX

Categories: Tags:

The PARK(ing) day initiative started in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco based art and design studio, and supported by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) this year to involve our community to celebrate and enliven public spaces through innovative designs.

Flex – “Community Parklet Series” is originally conceptualised by design consultancy COLOURS and fabricated by Innoverde with it’s newly launched green building panel – MultiPanel. The idea of Flex is to allow residents to form seats and tables of their desired choice and to be reconfigured to suit their diverse needs and adapt to different environments easily by themselves.

The fabrication of the Flex prototype is of utmost importance and note worthy as the choice of material required should be strong enough to take the weight of people seated and yet lightweight for easy mobility. Being placed outdoors, it needed to be waterproof and weatherproof to ensure its durability as well.

“When Dr Chong Keng Hua and Fong Ing from COLOURS approached us with the design and requirements of Flex, we found that MultiPanel fit all the criteria to build it. MultiPanel is 100% waterproof, weatherproof, lightweight yet strong. It is an energy efficient, environmentally friendly material that is an alternative to timber based products; a very easy material to work with.” said Ken Pereira, CEO of Innoverde.

The inclusion of the planter in the design also empowers residents to grow their own “container garden” in public spaces, promoting a sense of ownership of the place without privatising the area. With this movement, apart from creating additional outdoor spaces for residents to hang out at, the “container garden” enables people to “green’’ the area as well. Due to it’s lightweight nature, Flex can also be placed on green roofs without the need to strengthen building structures.

Moving forward, Innoverde aims to explore more community based concepts with COLOURS and to implement game-changing, green solutions to the construction industry that would help increase productivity and alleviate the manpower crunch.

Flex is now sitting in Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD) campus.

Innoverde – Putting Fuel Cell Technology in Electric Vehicles and more

Categories: Tags:

The EFOY Fuel Cell is a lightweight, mobile and most importantly, a green power source that is no bigger than a CPU. Leveraging on this technology, the E-Trike is Innoverde’s pet project and amongst many others, it is a product of love; it is a tricycle with a two-passenger cab powered by an EFOY fuel cell tucked snugly at the rear.

Innoverde100914-0211The idea came about when Ken Pereira, CEO and Director of Innoverde, saw the inconvenience and trouble traditional electric vehicle owners go through. They are restricted by the limited battery mileage and the need of existing infrastructure to charge the batteries, in addition to the time it takes for the battery to charge fully.

Whilst exploring the use of alternative clean energies for transport in green zones, Ken saw the potential in the EFOY fuel cell’s mobility, lightweight nature and eco-friendliness(zero emissions) to solve this problem. He explained, “ I wanted to experiment with the usage of the fuel cell technology to provide the E-trike with pedal-assisted power, which is set to supplement the rider’s strength as opposed to being an independent motor. Not only were we successful, with just one fuel cartridge, the E-trike is able to cover distances up to 1,500km.”

Additional experiments included hybrid solutions by coupling the fuel cell with solar panels to provide a 100% reliable powering solution that also provides power for additional E-Trike on-board add-ons like a 6 mega-pixel, 180 degree camera mounted in front and a remote router that can transmit the video feed wirelessly.

Innoverde is the exclusive distributor of the German born EFOY Fuel Cell technology in South East Asia. NEA, HDB and PUB, amongst many others, have been using this clean energy in their mobile deployments. With the EFOY Fuel Cell, they are able to monitor high rise littering to flood prevention monitoring remotely and with high mobility through Innoverde’s partner, Oneberry Technologies Pte Ltd, which provides manpower saving, remote monitoring solutions. Furthermore, with the right configuration, the EFOY Fuel Cell could last a whole month generating power at full load without requiring a change of fuel cartridge. This means that the deployment requires little to no human intervention or maintenance, resulting in substantial cost savings.

Security and monitoring industries are merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the implementation and feasibility of the EFOY Fuel Cell. Looking forward, Innoverde is aiming to further change the landscape through providing green power solutions to the construction industry and exploring any other industry that requires the mobile, lightweight and lasting power which the EFOY Fuel Cell provides. While one EFOY Fuel Cell can produce, on constant load, up to 110W of power, it can be stacked to fit the requirements of the device(s) it is powering.
